Biorefining & Bioproducts

A BCIC LIFE SCIENCES INITIATIVE

A biorefinery is a facility that integrates a variety of conversion processes to produce multiple bioproducts from biomass. These bioproducts are obtained using thermal, chemical, mechanical, and/or biological processes. High-value or high-volume bioproducts may enhance profitability, help meet energy needs, and reduce CO2 emissions.

Bioproducts are products made from forestry, agriculture, marine, and municipal waste biomass for household, commercial, industrial and environmental sectors. Specifically, biomass is any type of organic material that is available on a renewable or recurring basis. It may come in the form of raw material or primary crops, by-products left over from a variety of activities and industrial processes, and waste material.
