BC Entrepreneurs offered $335,000 in prizes for the Next Great Technology Business Idea

BRITISH COLUMBIA - Top entrepreneurs in B.C. can win $335,000 in prizes with this year's New Ventures BC competition, one of North America's largest technology business idea competitions.

This represents an increase of $200,000 over last year and is thanks to new title sponsor, the British Columbia Innovation Council and its Proof of Concept Awards.

Taking place over four rounds and seven months, this innovative contest is now in its eighth year and includes a unique mix of business education, networking, and mentoring. The competition aims to help very early-stage entrepreneurs acquire the business skills they need to get their technology to market. Previous winners who exemplify the competition's success include AirG, now the world's largest mobile community with 20 million users, and GenoLogics Life Sciences Software Inc., which has customers throughout North America and Europe.

Prizes include:

  • BC Hydro First Prize: $60,000 in cash and services PLUS
    BC Innovation Council Proof of Concept Award: $100,000

  • Enbridge Second prize: $38,000 in cash and services PLUS
    BC Innovation Council Proof of Concept Award: $50,000

  • Third prize: $17,000 in cash and services PLUS
    BC Innovation Council Proof of Concept Award: $50,000

  • BC Hydro Sustainability Prize: $20,000 cash

Any B.C. resident, team or business with an innovative technology product or service that has not yet secured material financing is eligible to enter. The deadline to enter is April 23, 2008.

Competitors can also participate in eight business education seminars, which continue April 9th, ahead of the April 23rd competition entry deadline. Non-competitors and those seeking to compete next year can attend the seminars for a $100 registration fee.
