Careers You Never Thought You Could Have in Science...and that's Just an Appetizer

RICHMOND, B.C. - The line between science and fun is a blur when it's creatively mixed in daily life. Richmond is home to innovators conducting science in fun and progressive ways, allowing local students a chance to explore careers they never considered to be in the realm of science.

From food science to making an engine that runs on food waste, everything is explored and nothing is off limits to the imagination.

Culinary Science

One example of this fun-filled new approach to science is the Richmond based company, DC Duby Wild Sweets, a culinary sensation founded by chocolatiers and culinary scientists, Dominique and Cindy Duby. Their adventures in molecular gastronomy have produced astounding, and delightfully delicious creations.

"Our approach to food combines artistry, science, and a true passion for scientific research aimed at expanding the palette of flavours and ingredients," said Dominique and Cindy Duby. "Our methodology is based on the application of scientific principles and techniques to understand and improve artisan food production. We believe that science and psychology are essential elements of the modern food experience."

Over the years, Wild Sweets has undertaken joint projects with faculty and students from the University of British Columbia's Faculty of Food Science. Dominique and Cindy Duby will be speaking at the 2nd Annual Science Expo on March 13, 2008.

2nd Annual Science Expo

The Science Expo is an opportunity to mix students, companies, academic institutions, and the general public to explore possibilities that involve science and technology in unique ways. Over 200 Richmond high school students will be showcasing their science projects, as they explore what their futures could hold. Various companies will be represented at the Career Fair including Genome British Columbia and Westport Innovations. Post-secondary schools, professional associations and non-profit organizations in the science and technology community will also be in attendance.

The event will feature opening remarks from Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie, a panel of innovators in "Opening the Door", and Science World's very own "Iron Scientist" competition. If you thought Iron Chef had some unique secret ingredients, prepare to be amazed by what these students can cook up!
