Paul and Helen Trussell Science & Technology Scholarship – Winner Announced

BCIC is pleased to announce Gwen Bailey of Cranbrook, B.C. as the 2008 recipient of the Paul and Helen Trussell Science & Technology Scholarship. She is currently an undergraduate student in the Faculty of Science at the University of British Columbia with a strong enthusiasm for science and a career in environmental chemistry.

"Science has been my passion ever since I was in grade school," said Bailey. "As a child, I would spend hours observing ants and beetles in the forest, completing supplementary math exercises, playing with the scientific toys in the community college physics lab, and preparing to enter the science fair with my award-winning project ‘How We See in 3D'. Now, my child far behind me, I am fortunate to be working towards my Bachelor of Science degree."

The Trussell Science Student Endowment Fund was established with an endowment of $100,000 from Dr. and Mrs. Trussell, with matched funding from the Province of British Columbia and a contribution from the Vancouver Foundation. Administered by BCIC, the scholarship was created to support promising students from the Kootenay-Boundary area who are studying natural or applied sciences. Valued at $20,000, recipients receive $5,000 per year for the last two years of undergraduate study and $5,000 per year for the first two years of graduate study. The scholarship assists students pursuing careers necessary for British Columbia and Canada to remain competitive in the global high-technology sector.
