BCIC is taking an active role in ensuring B.C. is keeping a strong focus on the energy, environmental and economic benefits that come from being a leader in the ocean energy sector. Instrumental in creating B.C.'s Ocean Renewable Energy Group (OREG), BCIC supports the group's work in positioning B.C. researchers and ocean sector companies at the forefront of the world market.

OREG has more than 110 local and international members and aims to advance the development of emerging energy technology opportunities.

Current ocean energy projects include:

  • A consortium supported by the District of Campbell River that has proposed a tidal energy development centre to test and improve tidal generators. The consortium will also explore the potential impact of integrating tidal power into the electricity grid.
  • SyncWave Systems of Pemberton is working to demonstrate its Power Resonator off Ahousat on the west coast of Vancouver Island in 2009.
  • Clean Current Power Technology's current development of the first 2MW tidal system is set to undergo a "Fundy Test" in the renowned tides of the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia.
  • Triton Consultants of Vancouver is currently assessing several large tidal projects for Korea's largest utility company.
  • BCIC is sponsoring the "Building the Business of Ocean Energy" conference. Set in Whistler, the conference will be held in late November-attracting over 200 world experts in the field.

These projects are bringing B.C. and the world closer to developing clean, renewable, and commercially-viable energy options. With new technologies and innovations emerging from many of B.C.'s coastal areas, the province is on its way to becoming a global leader in ocean energy technologies.
